Joseph was born on November 25, 1835 in Ashland County, Ohio to Andrew & Mary Molly (Artman) Shaver. On October 3, 1861, he married Agnes Colista Palmer, daughter of Cassius & Ruby Rosette (Turner) Palmer, in Ashland County. They later migrated to Chester Township, Eaton County, Michigan; where they resided until their deaths in 1911 (Joseph) & 1931 (Agnes).
