George W. Johnston
George W. Johnston was the son of William & Mary Rovella (Shaver) Johnston. He was born on October 31, 1891 in Michigan, USA.
On June 5, 1917, George and his brothers (Clyde William & Edson W. Johnston) registered in the WWI Draft. George, 25 at the time, was unmarried and lived at 119 Brook Street in Eaton Rapids, Eaton County, Michigan. His physical appearance was noted as being "short & stout, blue eyes, light brown hair."
On June 19, 1917, George married Ernestine Mildred Raymond, daughter of Ernest Charles & Bertha Livonia (Peterson) Raymond in Eaton Rapids.
At the time of his marriage, George was a Spinner at Woolen Mill (incorporated as Eaton Rapids Woolen Mills in 1918 and then as the Horner Woolen Mills Company in 1937) located in Eaton Rapids. This was a very common profession and place of employment in Eaton Rapids during this period.
Their names appear together on the 1920 U.S. Census with George's brother, Clyde, who lived with them at the time at 312 1/2 Center Road in Eaton Rapids. Both brothers worked at Eaton Rapids Woolen Mills.
Sometime before May 1922, Ernestine and George divorced.
Around 1929, he remarried Ruby C. Unknown, in Eaton Rapids, Eaton County. Ruby was born on September 12, 1905.
On the 1930 U.S. Census (dated May 5, 1930), they are listed as living at 311 Division Street in Eaton Rapids. His occupation is listed as a Spinner at Woolen Mills.
As of April 1, 1935, George & Ruby resided at 702 Jessop Avenue in Lansing, Ingham County. Per the 1940 U.S. Census (dated April 11, 1940), they still lived there. George's occupation was listed as a "well driller" and his income for 1939 was listed as "$700".
He passed away on December 1, 1978 (age 87), in Charlotte, Eaton County. Ruby preceded him in death on January 10, 1971. He was buried at Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids, Eaton County next to her.
George had no known children.
